Scott Robson joins WMU hockey staff

Scott Robson was ready for a change.

He got it Thursday, when Western Michigan University's hockey team tapped him as its new assistant coach.

Robson joins the Broncos after six seasons as an assistant at Quinnipiac University, where he helped the Bobcats to a 125-78-18 record, including a 2-1 win vs. WMU last season.

"I've been involved at Quinnipiac for 11 of the last 14 years and I think the opportunity to move west and further my career at a place like WMU was a no-brainer," Robson said.

Robson replaces Chris Brooks, who left in late July after nine years at WMU to become head coach at Rio Grande Valley of the Central Hockey League.

Although Robson has no previous connections to the Broncos, he said he ran into Brooks often on the recruiting trail. He also had conversations over the past couple of seasons with Marc Fakler, the Broncos' other assistant under head coach Jim Culhane.

"We recruited some of the same kids," Robson said. "And they spoke highly of it, which also played into my decision to come here."

Robson worked with Quinnipiac's power play, sharpening it to 22 percent efficiency during his six seasons, and he says one of his main objectives is to help the Broncos score more goals.

"That wasn't the biggest deciding factor (in being hired)," Robson said. "I think Jim and I just felt very comfortable with each other."
